Antique Native American Mesquakie or Sauk & Fox Indian War Bundle Club
Antique Mesquakie or Sauk & Fox Indians “War Bundle” Ball-Heded Club. It’s a small ball-headed club made from a hard dense burl wood, probably of tiger (flame) maple in traditional form of Western Great Lakes. The club exactly replicates the real fighting war clubs to the smallest detail, only in miniature. It measures 6.5 inches long and 2.5 inches wide from the remotest part opposite the ball head of the club to the end of the ball. Diameter of a ball is 1.5 inches. It weighs 57 grams. Such a clubs also called War Bundle Club were considered sacred objects, been part of Medicine or War Bundles and used in ceremonies and rituals. The club is attributed to Mesquakie or Sauk and Fox Indians and most likely dated from the 18th to 19th century. The club is of the utmost craftsmanship showing a truly artistic appearance with a prominent curve design with large spherical round burl root ball head and unusual median ridge that runs the entirety of the club which is carved from one solid piece of wood. The club has an excellent form with carved tapering handle and drilled hole in the middle of the grip probably for suspension of a trade cloth, beaded drop or drop of coup feathers, that now are gone. The opposite (inner) side of a handle is carved with a single groove at a grip. The wood is solid, smooth and well polished and represent a high level of a skill of a Native carver. Such bundle-size clubs are not so common, quite rare and appears seldom on the market. Most of them are in hands of private collectors or in museums. I’m listed this wonderful and unique War Bundle Club at a minimally reasonable price, so you have an opportunity to replenish your treasures and add really unique piece close related with spiritual practice and beliefs of Native Americans, that certainly will become a true brilliant in your collection!
