Native Alaskan Yupik Story Basket – Hunting Basket. Dimensions – approx 14″ high x 14″ diameter. Natural and died color. Natural tone background with dark brown, green, and red inclusions. Decorated overall with hunting scenes. Hutches, kayaks in repose, in tow, and on the water. Hunters are displayed capturing seals and birds. Very subtle and delightful weaving connecting hunters and hunted. An arrow striking a bird, a spear striking a seal, with a kayak in tow. Great attention to detail. Overall a beautiful basket portraying the necessities of life in the Alaskan Arctic. Light wear from use and display. Some losses at the rim and base. Light fading here and there. Provenance – from a California private collection. Myths, legends, and storytelling have been part of the Inuit culture for centuries.
