Of all the different types of artifacts, cradle boards are my favorite. They represent warmth, compassion, new life and parenting. This is a beautiful antique Blackwood cradle board from 1900. In the cradle board a baby would be placed. The board (made from plywood) could be carried on a back, in a wagon, and rested against a tree. The Blackwood People used this style of cradle board for generations, and in some cases still do. This board measures 32 long X 12 1/2′ at the widest part of the top. The board is covered with tanned leather – suede to the outside. The sack for the baby is made from a thin light colored leather, a darker leather strip is used for trim. The top of the board is covered with a deep maroon/brown fabric. Sewn onto the fabric are beaded designs which include a start in the middle. The beads are yellow-gold, red, black, orange, and silver. The bead work is firmly in place. Around the very edge of the maroon fabric/frame of the board is a one bead strand of red beads. The leather sack has a leather tie. Leather fringe hangs from the bag and from the top frame of the board. There is a sewn and stuffed pad inside the bag that works like a little mattress. It has some stains on it (see photo). The leather and bead work are in good shape for their age. Lovely artifact for a collection — gorgeous colors and artistry along with rich Blackfoot cultural history. 11×14 Oil Painting on Signed and dated by artist. A lively look and rich tactile texture with it. The artist put a lot of time in to the realistic thoughtful looking eye. Care of your art work. You can spray your painting with a varnish. It is very easy to do, and you can put the painting on a wood panel so that it is easier to frame. I would be happy to help you do this! Some of my customers like me to do this for them. I can do three coats of spray varnish for an extra 10.00. I can put your canvas sheet on a wood panel for 20.00 dollars. Laurelle Macy grew up on a farm in northern Canada. Endless in its dimensions, untamed in its spirit, curious in its isolation, to Laurelle it is this and more. It is the stuff of passion, of creation, of timeless inspiration. S relationship with the land and its people is a seasoned one. Raised in a series of bush camps, Indian reservations and boom towns in Canada? S North West Territories, Macy understood early on, that her paintings could act as windows to a world little seen by others, but well known and loved by her. Laurelle first obtained her Associates in Adverting Design. She worked as a graphic designer before moving on to get her Bachelors in art at Brigham Young University. After returning to the north Laurelle enjoyed success in a number of galleries, festival and commissions. Her and her family moved to Utah where she completed her master? S degree at the University of Idaho and has been actively involved in advanced design education at the college level. S major talent lies in her portrayal of what she calls? The centerpieces of her artwork are native people, landscapes, and wildlife, all arrestingly? S refinement of detail is engaging and her love of color apparent, at times immediate and aggressive, at others subtle and leading. Macy experience with color and composition seems to reflect the very personality of her subjects. To see her paintings and feel somehow touched by an open genuine spirit. This singular connection between the viewer and the subject is Macy? To paint the west, its people, animals and its landscape with compassion and insight, she hopes is her success. S work has been shown in galleries across Northern Canada and in select studios in Utah. In addition to her work, Macy is faculty a national art institute, has illustrated children? S books, portrait painter and is a 3 time grant recipient celebrating northern native people. Her diverse career, where she worked along side Dene Nation elders and Inuit carvers, to the cutting edge world of graphic design gives her tremendous understanding and perspective. An artist of unquestionable talent with yet untapped potential. Macy is certainly someone to watch for. A seasoned elder of his tribe, this Native American stands proudly as a symbol. This bust sculpture depicts a tribe leader, cloaked in a wool shawl and animal skin. The clothing of Native Americans was closely related to the environment in which they lived and their religious beliefs. They developed diverse styles of clothing depending on the region they lived in and the climate. Breechclouts, or loincloths, leggings, tunic shirts for men. But in the coldest areas. Warm trousers, hooded anoraks and mittens protected people from freezing temperatures. Despite the vast differences in climate and clothing styles, Native Americans had in common the basic notion of living in harmony with nature. Most Native American people lived close to nature and believed that animals had spiritual powers and strengths. Many believed that by wearing parts of an animal a person could gain some of that animal’s power and strength. Skins became more than just putting on a form of comfortable and durable clothing. It became a part of Native Americans’ religious practice and a way to improve oneself. The animal they chose usually said something about them or a quality of that animal they sought to have. This Native American wears the head and skin of a bear on his head. Feathers hang along the sides of his face and a single feather sticks upwards.
