1850s Huron Indian Moosehair Embroidered Birch Bark Card Case Native American
Offered is a rare find. This Victorian era (circa 1850) Huron Indian Native American Birch Bark Card Case with Floral Moosehair embroidery. This antique piece measures 3 3/4″ by 2 3/4″. It came from a Maine sale and was said to have been displayed at the Hudson Museum at the University of Maine. It was dated to the 1850s. Birch bark mostly intact. Some cracking along one side and edge of front. Some of the moosehair embroidery has rubbed off, mostly on one side. A note: We’re all healthy here and are isolated and washing hands regularly. If you’re worried just leave your packages in a garage or porch area for a few days before opening. Thanks and be well. Most of the items we sell come from our personal collection gathered over the years from our travels, from Native powwows and craft stores, antique shops, auctions and estate sales. Now that our kids are in college and beyond, we are letting some items go so others can enjoy them. Then I’ll send you a combined invoice. Sorry for the expense, but I’ve had items lost overseas when mailing first class and don’t want to take the risk of losing items. I pack carefully and try to reuse materials to save on environmental impact. I often double-box items with smaller gift boxes collected from various thrift stores. I reuse all that I receive and hope you will make use of the ones that come in your packages. Offered is a beautiful Great Lakes Ojibwe/Anishinaabe Quill Birch Bark and Sweetgrass Basket Box with a flower with a raised center and fancy quillwork on the sides. This is unsigned but has all the hallmarks of some of the quill box makers from Manitoulin Island (Wikwemikong Reserve) and Spanish River (Sagamok Reserve), particularly the Toulouse family. Sadly, she passed away a few years ago so her work will be harder and harder to find. The quill box measures 3 1/8 by 2 1/8. No missing quills or damage.
