1850s Huron Indian Moosehair Embroidered Birch Bark Card Case Native American
Offered is a rare find. This Victorian era (circa 1850) Huron Indian Native American Birch Bark Card Case with Floral Moosehair embroidery. This antique piece measures 3 3/4″ by 2 3/4″. It came from a Maine sale and was said to have been displayed at the Hudson Museum at the University of Maine. It was dated to the 1850s. Birch bark mostly intact. Some cracking along one side and edge of front. Some of the moosehair embroidery has rubbed off, mostly on one side. A note: We’re all healthy here and are isolated and washing hands regularly. If you’re worried just leave your packages in a garage or porch area for a few days before opening. Thanks and be well. Most of the items we sell come from our personal collection gathered over the years from our travels, from Native powwows and craft stores, antique shops, auctions and estate sales. Now that our kids are in college and beyond, we are letting some items go so others can enjoy them. Then I’ll send you a combined invoice. Sorry for the expense, but I’ve had items lost overseas when mailing first class and don’t want to take the risk of losing items. I pack carefully and try to reuse materials to save on environmental impact. I often double-box items with smaller gift boxes collected from various thrift stores. I reuse all that I receive and hope you will make use of the ones that come in your packages. A spontoon, sometimes known by the variant spelling espontoon or as a half-pike, is a type of European polearm that came into being alongside the pike. The spontoon was in wide use by the mid-seventeenth century, and it continued to be used until the late-nineteenth century. Unlike the pike, which was an extremely long weapon (typically 14 or 15 feet), the spontoon measured only 6 or 7 feet in overall length. Generally, this weapon featured a more elaborate head than the typical pike. The head of a spontoon often had a pair of smaller blades on each side, giving the weapon the look of a military fork, or a trident. There were also spontoon-style axes which used the same shaped blades mounted on the side of the weapon with a shorter handle. Original old forged iron pipe axe with spontoon style head. Eastern style Great Lakes culture. RARE bat wing incised axe head, it’s seldom seen. Head is huge and oversized. The hickory wood haft is original to the head. The wood has a nice heavy and dark patina. The handle has been well used and has good wear on it. There are many “hot file” marks along the haft and old brass tacks, these are the older tacks that have a square center, made by blacksmiths. A beautiful sign of age. A good patina on the surface of the head and tacks as well. This tomahawk needs to be displayed and cherished for future generations to see and appreciate! 24″ haft 12″ head length. Old Huron Indian Tomahawk War Axe Forged Blade With 2 Hallmarks 1800's
Original old Huron Indian tomahawk war axe… Forged iron head has 2 hallmarks… Hallmark 1 appears to be an oval cartouche with a crown over a “V”… Hallmark 2 is a circular cartouche with sitting fox inside… This is well known as an early fur trade hallmark sometimes used by Hudson’s Bay Company… Old telegraph wire wrapped on the handle… Looks like the wire was wrapped around a hot file brandning area, the wood is charred… Head is slightly loose which is correct for its age, wood will shrink over time, this ia a great tell tale sign of age….
