Antique Plains Indian Dag Knife Forged Blade Hudsons Bay Co. Paddle Handle 1860
The dag knife is in excellent condition with no repairs or damage. Nice forged blade, appears to be a re-purposed buffalo lance blade. Very nice sitting fox mark in circular cartouche on the blade. Large Hudson’s Bay Co mark on the handle and on the other side is a conjoined HB mark in rectangular cartouche. Ash handle is original to the blade. The handle is in the shape of a canoe paddle, thus the name paddle handle dag knife. VERY NICE patina all over, really shows its age! Nice Dutch wheel shaped brass tack pattern on the pommel. The unusual style handle and blade are very desirable. Conservatively dated to 1860 but may be earlier. Please ask any questions you may have. Thank you so much for looking! Original Early Sioux Indian Dag Knife Paddle Handle Old Trade Cross Attached HBC
Authentic original early 1800’s Sioux Indian paddle handle dag knife. The blade is hammer forged, this blade undoubtedly has been cut down from a larger buffalo lance and re-purposed as a knife blade, a common practice in the old days. Original ash handle has a nice old Hudson’s Bay Company trade cross attached to the handle. Numerous hallmarks, FOX, HBC, HB, Fleur Des Lis, and sitting fox cartouche. Handle is tight and secure. 9″ blade and 17″ long total. This is a fine example of a Native American weapon of war and utilitarian object in one. If you have a question, please ask. Fantastic example of mid 1800’s Sioux weaponry. Large dag knives were carried as a sign of power and status but also served a utilitarian purpose. Original wood handle has good wear patterns along its length. Old brass tacks in a Dutch circle on the pommel. Notice there are some cracks and wood deterioration, this is caused by over 150 years of changes in humidity and temperature causing the wood to dry, shrink, and crack. This is an excellent indicator of age. The handle is tight and secure. The iron blade is a re-purposed buffalo lance blade, most likely cut down and re-handled in this classic dag knife style. It is all original and un-restored. Blacksmiths worked with the Indians who would come to the villages and towns for their work. Also, travelling blacksmiths would be available for work on the open plains and in small villages or outposts. It is common for a blacksmith to re-work a lance blade or bowie blade, sometimes cutlery, into an Indian weapon, for trade. Just a unique and beautiful work of art. A museum quality Plains dag knife ready to display in your collection. 8″ blade, 6 3/4″ handle. 14 3/4 overall length. Widest part of blade is 2 3/8 wide. Originates from a Washington DC estate, a very old estate with ties to the wild west days.
