Lakota, fourth quarter 19th century, beaded on both sides, quill wrapped rawhide slats and fringe from the bottom. Measures 30 inches long x 7 inches wide. Sinew sewn, appears that no beads are missing, hide is native tanned and supple as seen in the pictures where I folded the bag to demonstrate that it is pliable. Original old forged iron trade pipe axe tomahawk. The head is beautifully forged and has an extremely rare triple bat wing cutout. Many Plains pipe tomahawks were made with small piercings, some being holes or weeping hearts. These pipe tomahawks were numerous and easy to come by. This particular style is known as the bat-wing for the shape of one the piercings that resemble the shape of a bat. These tomahawks were more obscure and especially made for high ranking chiefs, war chiefs and particularly notable leaders. Very few are in collections but those that are tend to be very fancy in decoration. Most have file branding, tacks, and specially made hafting. These tomahawks were carried as status symbols, rarely used in battle but carried as a recognition of power and importance. Most batwing tomahawks in collections today have two piercings, one that resembles the shape of a fly and the other a bat. More rare than the double batwing tomahawks, are the triple pierced examples that typically have the third piercing in the form of a heart. The ash wood haft is original to the head. The wood has a nice heavy and dark patina. The handle has been well used and has good wear on it. There are many “hot file” marks along the haft. Three scalloped shoulders of the haft, one containing a hole for attaching a beaded drop or beads or horsehair. A good patina on the surface of the head. The blade is a hawk bill style. This tomahawk needs to be displayed and cherished for future generations to see and appreciate! 24″ haft 12″ head length. No reasonable offer will be refused. Authentic original 1780’s Sioux Indian pipe tomahawk. This example has a highly sought after forged head that was originally a gun barrel. You can clearly see rifle marks inside the bowl. The iron head has a nice “in the metal” patina and shows good use and wear patterns. The head was forged from a gun barrel and there is a nice lap weld seen as pictured. The haft is probably ash, single shoulder hole, and several old brass tacks. The mouth hole is well worn and intact. The head of the tomahawk is almost exactly 8 inches long. Haft is 16.75 long. Fantastic example of 18th century Sioux weaponry. Pipe tomahawks were carried as a sign of power and status but also used to settle treaties and promote peace. This pipe tomahawk is all original and un-restored. A very rare and desirable forged head from a gun barrel. Look closely inside the bowl, there are clearly defined rifling marks. There is a definitive color change on the blade denoting where a hardened steel bit was forged into the softer iron of the gun barrel. Original wood stem shows its concentric rings with drilled smoke hole right in the center. Undecorated haft has an excellent look to it, lots of age and wore areas. There is a small amount of bend in the haft from over 200 years of drying. A museum quality pipe tomahawk ready to hang in your collection. Originates from a Washington DC estate, a very old estate with ties to the wild west days. 21 inch long stem and head is 8.5 inches long. Authentic original mid 1800’s Plains Indian pipe tomahawk. This example has a highly sought after silver bat wing & heart inlaid into the blade. The iron head has a nice “in the metal” patina and shows good use and wear patterns. The head was forged and then the blade was cutout then inlaid in the traditional way, seen as pictured. Along the haft are many hot file brand marks and a single shoulder hole with nice original old square shank tacks. Just look at the beautiful wood grain on the haft, amazing! The mouthpiece is well worn and intact. There is a nice original clean out plug in the end of the haft. The head of the tomahawk is 12 and half inches long. The haft is 23 inches long. Fantastic example of 18th century Sioux weaponry. Pipe tomahawks were carried as a sign of power and status but also used to settle treaties and promote peace. This pipe tomahawk is all original and un-restored. A very rare and desirable forged head from a gun barrel. There is a definitive color change on the blade denoting where a hardened steel bit was forged into the softer iron of the gun barrel. Original wood stem shows its concentric rings with drilled smoke hole right in the center. Undecorated haft has an excellent look to it, lots of age and wore areas. There is a small amount of bend in the haft from over 200 years of drying. A museum quality pipe tomahawk ready to hang in your collection. Originates from a Washington DC estate, a very old estate with ties to the wild west days. 21 inch long stem and head is 8.5 inches long.
