A seasoned elder of his tribe, this Native American stands proudly as a symbol. This bust sculpture depicts a tribe leader, cloaked in a wool shawl and animal skin. The clothing of Native Americans was closely related to the environment in which they lived and their religious beliefs. They developed diverse styles of clothing depending on the region they lived in and the climate. Breechclouts, or loincloths, leggings, tunic shirts for men. But in the coldest areas. Warm trousers, hooded anoraks and mittens protected people from freezing temperatures. Despite the vast differences in climate and clothing styles, Native Americans had in common the basic notion of living in harmony with nature. Most Native American people lived close to nature and believed that animals had spiritual powers and strengths. Many believed that by wearing parts of an animal a person could gain some of that animal’s power and strength. Skins became more than just putting on a form of comfortable and durable clothing. It became a part of Native Americans’ religious practice and a way to improve oneself. The animal they chose usually said something about them or a quality of that animal they sought to have. This Native American wears the head and skin of a bear on his head. Feathers hang along the sides of his face and a single feather sticks upwards. The amazing details of this handmade sculpture can be. Seen in his aged face. Every wrinkle and crease can be felt with a fingertip. His forehead, lined cheeks and mouth. His deep eyes hang low with all he has seen and experienced. He is the father to all, young and old. 100% bronze, this brown patina sculpture was cast using the “Lost Wax Method” and mounted on a marble base and is signed. Endless in its dimensions, untamed in its spirit, curious in its isolation, to Laurelle it is this and more. It is the stuff of passion, of creation, of timeless inspiration. Macys relationship with the land and its people is a seasoned one. Raised in a series of bush camps, Indian reservations and boom towns in Canadas North West Territories, Macy understood early on, that her paintings could act as windows to a world little seen by others, but well known and loved by her. Laurelle first obtained her Associates in Adverting Design. She worked as a graphic designer before moving on to get her Bachelors in art at Brigham Young University. After returning to the north Laurelle enjoyed success in a number of galleries, festival and commissions. Her and her family moved to Utah where she completed her masters degree at the University of Idaho and has been actively involved in advanced design education at the college level. Laurelles major talent lies in her portrayal of what she calls living material. The centerpieces of her artwork are native people, landscapes, and wildlife, all arrestingly alive in her paintings. Macy experience with color and composition seems to reflect the very personality of her subjects. To see her paintings and feel somehow touched by an open genuine spirit. This singular connection between the viewer and the subject is Macys desire. To paint the west, its people, animals and its landscape with compassion and insight, she hopes is her success. Laurelle Macys work has been shown in galleries across Northern Canada and in select studios in Utah. In addition to her work, Macy is faculty a national art institute, has illustrated childrens books, portrait painter and is a 3 time grant recipient celebrating northern native people. Her diverse career, where she worked along side Dene Nation elders and Inuit carvers, to the cutting edge world of graphic design gives her tremendous understanding and perspective. The Native American Shaman can be imagined walking through a wind-whipped forest, holding a Ox head in his hands, looking high into the sky that appears and disappears through the dancing leaves of treetops. Shamans work with their allies-the animal spirits in order to receive messages of healing and insight. Gathering the Great Spirit into his soul, he listens to the silent language of the wise voices of the animal spirits that surround him. The Ox Head symbolizes strength in word and thought, ability to listen, grace and appreciation for the beauty of balance, understanding of what’s necessary for survival, power of gratitude and giving and connection to the woodland goddess. Rabbit’s medicine includes moving through fear, living by one’s own wits, receiving hidden teachings and intuitive messages, quick thinking, strengthening intuition, and paradox. The turkey speaks of generosity, life-giving and sharing of happiness. This multi-meaning, spiritually rich sculpture is ideal for any Native American Indian enthusiast or one who needs to be reminded of the messages that emit through this piece. Condition : This sculpture is in perfect condition. Bronze Dimensions with Marble Base:Height 14″ x Width 10″ Marble Dimensions: 7 1/2″ X 6″ Height without base: 10 Weight :20 LBS Inventory : 81Y140B9518 This is an exquisite bronze bust of a Native American warrior chief. He stares at the beholder, wild and bold, with an air of spiritual resilience. His hair is adorned with braids that are wrapped with strips of deer hide coated with a turquoise patina. A long feather lost in the back of his hair stretches towards gravity also finished in a turquoise patina. He wears a bone breastplate which was a popular chest ornament or armor. Since the hair-pipe bones were difficult and expensive to obtain, the number of bones in the plate often indicated the wealth of a warrior. Such breastplates were worn on occasion in battle, but could be penetrated easily by an arrow or a bullet, so they were mainly a decorative or medicine item. The sculpture was molded using the archaic method of lost-wax casting with skin tones finished in a brown patina stain for perpetuation. The chief is mounted upon a black marble plinth with the artist Milo’s signature. Virgin Islands, however, an additional charge may be required.
