Rare Northwest Coast Makah Nootka Indian Abalone Shell Basket Native American
Is a rare vintage Makah Nootka Nuu-chah-nulth Indian Abalone Shell Basket. You don’t find these shell baskets very often. This came from the Northwest Coast of either the US or Canada. The basket measures approx. 4″ long, 3″ across, and about 1 at tallest point. The chain-like design is still fairly vivid. It probably dates to first half of 20th Century. It is in nice condition for age with very little fading. E rough/rubbed area on bottom and on one side and a few tiny nicks to rim. This is something that went into effect on Jan. Our Native American and First Nation items have been collected from various places–auctions, estate sales, pow wows and craft stores from our travels. Many of our Quill Boxes come from Manitoulin Island, where we spend part of each summer. We hate to let some of these items go but with our children in college, it’s time to liquidate some of the collection and share our items with others. Important Information for all items. It will also be double-boxed. You are responsible for any duty charged at the border. This large Pit River basket is decorated with geometric designs around the basket. It uniquely shows the remains of the weaver’s thread used during construction to keep the shape of the basket while the materials are expertly worked. Typically these treads are then removed however this weaver for some reason did not complete the task. This is a rare and great example to show part of the weaving process not normally seen after the basket is completed. Circa: 1910 Diameter: 10″ Height: 9″.
