EDWARD CURTIS INDIAN DAYS OF THE LONG AGO, 1915 Native American Indian PHOTOS
CURTIS INDIAN DAYS OF THE LONG AGO, 1915 Scarce North American Indian Photographs, Native American Rites, Religion, Culture Publisher: World Book Company, New York (1915) In exceedingly well preserved condition. 221 pages, followed by 2 pages of illustrations and blank pages. 1915 2nd edition, originally published in 1914. Eautifully illustrated throughout with photographs by the author and drawings by F. The boards and binding are solid and tight, and display minimal shelf wear. The pages are crisp and clean, and are free of interior markings. The book does not seem to have been read. Contents include: Morning in Camp; The Sweat-Bath; Ways of the Clayoquot; Adventures of Coyote; Hunting the Seals; The Snake Dance; An Elk Hunt; A Buffalo Hunt; and much more. Please see below for more information about this groundbreaking book from the author’s forward. Description from the Author’s Forward This little book was written in the hope that it would give a more intimate view of Indian life in the old days, in the days when to the far western tribes the white race was but a rumor, and buffalo roamed the plains in countless numbers. A further desire was to call attention to the great divergencies in Indian life, the number of languages, and the striking differences in dress and habits. The pictures, as well as the text, will emphasize this. We have been prone to regard Indians as being without religion or spiritual life. Instead of being without a religion, they were influenced in every important act of their life by spiritual beliefs and religious practices. This fact is touched upon not as a pedantic lecture but rather as we see its influence on the characters of the story and in the folk-tales. I have tried to show how their religious beliefs influence the character building of the youth. Simple animistic beliefs, which bring the spirit beings close, are easy of comprehension, and the belief in the ever-present nearness has a strong influence upon the children… Book Review The book is aimed at young readers, incorporates many Indian legends, with the goal of understanding their divergent cultures and languages, their spiritual beliefs and their religious practices. The book is beautifully illustrated with photographs by the author and drawings by F. The story takes place in Flathead (Salish) country, home of the Nez Perce Indians, in what is nowadays western Montana. Two visitors, wanderers from the East, come to the Salish camp and using sign language because their words are different, tell wonderful stories and also foretell of disaster to all tribes with the coming of the white men. The visitors lodge with the chief of the tribe, and bond with the chief’s nearly 10 year old son, who is the central character in the story… [Amazon] Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions! Authentic Vintage Antique Hopi Kachina Doll Native American Southwest Indian
My wife’s grandfather picked this up when he made a trek to the southwest back in the early 1950s. He used to be the State Geologist of Arkansas and might have been on an excavation trip at the time. This has been in my wife’s family ever since. Guessing this is carved from cottonwood. Maintains original paint, feather and string. As photos show, the wood has dried and there is a crack on the left foot and down the back of the piece. Crack along the back appears to be pretty old. Feathers on top are beginning to come a bit loose from the doll — still holds firm, though. Displays nicely and is still able to stand upright on its own. Measures roughly 8.5 tall. Happy to provide more photos or answer questions if I can. The item “Authentic Vintage Antique Hopi Kachina Doll Native American Southwest Indian” is in sale since Sunday, April 28, 2019. Antique Lakota Sioux Indian Pipe Axe Tomahawk Large Bat Wing Cutout Wyoming
Original old forged iron trade pipe axe tomahawk. The head is beautifully forged and has an extremely rare large bat wing cutout. Many Plains pipe tomahawks were made with small piercings, some being holes or weeping hearts. These pipe tomahawks were numerous and easy to come by. This particular style is known as the bat-wing for the shape of one the piercings that resemble the shape of a bat. These tomahawks were more obscure and especially made for high ranking chiefs, war chiefs and particularly notable leaders. Very few are in collections but those that are tend to be very fancy in decoration. Most have file branding, tacks, and specially made hafting. These tomahawks were carried as status symbols, rarely used in battle but carried as a recognition of power and importance. Most batwing tomahawks in collections today have two piercings, one that resembles the shape of a fly and the other a bat. More rare than the double batwing tomahawks, are the large cutouts with several shapes combined. The ash wood haft is original to the head. The wood has a nice heavy and dark patina. The handle has been well used and has good wear on it. There are many “hot file” marks along the haft. One shoulder on the haft, containing a hole for attaching a beaded drop or beads or horsehair. A good patina on the surface of the head. The blade is a large classic style with small French hook. This tomahawk needs to be displayed and cherished for future generations to see and appreciate! 24″ haft 12″ head length. No reasonable offer will be refused.
