Known as Karl Bodmer in literature and paintings, as a Swiss and French citizen his name has been listed as Johann Karl Bodmer and Jean-Charles Bodmer respectively. After 1843, likely as a result of his son Charles-Henry Barbizon, he began to sign his works K Bodmer. Karl Bodmer was well known in Germany for his watercolors, drawings and aquatints of cities and landscapes of the Rhine, Mosel and Lahn rivers. As a member of the Barbizon School – a French landscape painting group from the mid-19th century, he created many oil paintings with animal motifs as well as wood engravings, drawings, and book illustrations. Best known in the United States as a painter who captured the American West of the 19th century with extremely accurate depictions of its inhabitants. He accompanied German explorer Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied from 1832 through 1834 on his Missouri River expedition. He was hired as an artist by Maximilian with the specific intent of traveling through the American West and recording images of cities, rivers, towns and people they saw along the way, including many images of Native Americans along the Missouri and that region. Bodmer was made a Knight in the French Legion of Honour in 1877. Many of Bodmer’s work was chronicled in Prince Maximilian’s book entitled Maximilian Prince of Wied’s Travels in the Interior of North America. Look and see what other collectors have said! R Tom Gilleon Red Day Butte #2/45 Giclee Canvas Native American Framed Tipi

About Red Day Butte “The values, culture and spirituality of the Lakota reflected the state of harmony they enjoyed with the land, “says Tom Gilleon of Red Day Butte. You could consider many of the paintings I have done of tipis as soliloquies, but this one has much more the feeling of a duet, one that emphasized that harmonious relationship. While Gilleon is renowned for his contemporary geometric vision of the West, when he paints a landscape it is obvious that he can put it all together as well as he can take it apart. “If you remove the tipi, it would still be a complete painting, ” he says. Camp would always be made with the tipi entrance facing East so that the light of the new day would shine through there first, so this is sunrise and not sunset. I couldn’t resist having fun with the title. Looking back, I was probably most influenced by the old era art directors and illustrators who had the amazing ability to quickly and simply tell a story or convey a feeling with their artwork. I believe that this simplicity and strength is the key to fine art. Light, color, value, composition and line are paramount in importance. Tom Gilleon About Artist R. Tom Gilleon’s art is hard to pigeonhole. His interpretations of the American West are genuine and unique. His representations of native teepees are archetypal and primitive in their basic forms yet they are remarkably contemporary in composition with a sprinkling of personal symbols and humor. Gilleon’s work is coveted by collectors, increasingly finding homes in prominent museums and auctions such as the Coeur d’Alene. Gilleon was born in 1942 and raised in Florida by his grandparents in the tiny outpost of Starke, near Jacksonville and the storied banks of the Suwannee River. His grandfather had immigrated to the United Stated from Scotland and became a renowned cabinetmaker. His grandmother was a full-blooded Cherokee. Gilleon earned a scholarship to play baseball at the University of Florida where he took courses in architecture. He served in the Navy in the early 1960’s and then worked as an illustrator for NASA’s Apollo space program. Eventually, he went solo as a freelance illustrator based in Orlando an was hired by The Walt Disney Corporation to deliver conceptual sketches and designs for its Disney World theme park. He later moved to California to work at Disney’s Imagineering studio which designed Epcot Center; Gilleon also assisted in the planning of Disneyland Tokyo, Disneyland Hong Kong and Disneyland Paris. The American West left a mesmerizing impact on him as an artist. Here Gilleon found clusters of teepee rings from encamp. Ments which inspire him to contemplate how the camps might have looked centuries ago. Enjoy this art framed already. Notice how the design and color of the frame dramatizes and accentuates the art without overpowering it. We were the preeminent frame shop in our community for 23 years. As shown, professionally framed with high quality wood frame stock by Larson Juhl. The color and texture on the frame perfectly reflects the style and mood of the artwork. All corners have been reinforced. Framed size is 33.5″ W x 24″ T. Published by Greenwich Workshop in 2012. Your art will be professionally packaged. We know how to do it.
