Mid 1800's Sioux Indian Dag Knife Original Trade Knife Forged Blade
Fantastic example of mid 1800’s Sioux weaponry. Large dag knives were carried as a sign of power and status but also served a utilitarian purpose. Original wood handle has good wear patterns along its length. Old brass tacks in a Dutch circle on the pommel. Notice there are some cracks and wood deterioration, this is caused by over 150 years of changes in humidity and temperature causing the wood to dry, shrink, and crack. This is an excellent indicator of age. The handle is tight and secure. The iron blade is a re-purposed buffalo lance blade, most likely cut down and re-handled in this classic dag knife style. It is all original and un-restored. Blacksmiths worked with the Indians who would come to the villages and towns for their work. Also, travelling blacksmiths would be available for work on the open plains and in small villages or outposts. It is common for a blacksmith to re-work a lance blade or bowie blade, sometimes cutlery, into an Indian weapon, for trade. Just a unique and beautiful work of art. A museum quality Plains dag knife ready to display in your collection. 8″ blade, 6 3/4″ handle. 14 3/4 overall length. Widest part of blade is 2 3/8 wide. Originates from a Washington DC estate, a very old estate with ties to the wild west days. The item “Mid 1800’s Sioux Indian Dag Knife Original Trade Knife Forged Blade” is in sale since Wednesday, March 20, 2019.
