Authentic 1780's sioux indian pipe tomahawk gun barrel head + forged lap weld
Authentic original 1780’s Sioux Indian pipe tomahawk. This example has a highly sought after forged head that was originally a gun barrel. You can clearly see rifle marks inside the bowl. The iron head has a nice patina and shows good use and wear patterns. The head was forged from a gun barrel and there is a nice lap weld seen as pictured. The smoke hole is well worn and intact. The head of the tomahawk is almost exactly 9.25 inches long. Haft is 20 long. This is a fine example of a Native American weapon of war and peace pipe in one. If you have a question, please ask. Good luck and God bless the USA! In the early days, even in well-settled areas, iron was expensive. On the frontier the costs of transportation increased the price even. Guns received rough usage and scrap gun barrels became an. Important source of iron. The tomahawk maker was quick to take. Advantage of the cylindrical shape. A drill was not. Necessary for there was already a hole for the bowl, and no dif. Ficult welding was required. After the tube was necked down for. The shank, it was flattened all the length from the shank to its far. A slit was then cut and opened with a drift to form the eye. Sometimes a steel bit was welded to the cutting edge. The bowl made in this manner was long, like the catlinite pipe. Authentic Mid 1800's Sioux Indian Spontoon Pipe Tomahawk Forged Iron Head
For sale is a very special piece of Native American history, it’s a pipe tomahawk and it’s kind of a dual symbol. The tomahawk’s a sign of war, and the pipe is a sign of peace. And it works as a pipe and as a tomahawk, the Plains Indians and tribes all throughout the U. Carried these as signs of authority. The stem, or the haft, is ash, and it’s been decorated with hot file branding marks, common to Sioux pipe tomahawks. The head is in great condition, its iron and shows excellent age. Large round quillons identify the spontoon style. The spontoon head does show a few dings and blemishes as expected with a piece this old. This head stands out in the crowd! Two very unusual features include a dag knife shaped cutout in the blade and an inlaid copper arrow head symbol in the blade. The haft has some wear but its a solid as a rock. Ceremonial hot file brands are seen along the haft’s length. There are three “shoulders” on the haft but only one is drilled with a single hole that could be used to tie on a beaded drop or old trade beads and buck skin thongs. The haft has a scalloped look to it, rising humps and lower valleys when viewed in profile. Makes for a beautiful display! Tomahawk dates 1850 or earlier. The stem is about 2 feet long and the head of the tomahawk is 11 inches long. I hate to sell this but my husband has long since passed away and I need to sell some of his collection to make ends meet. I just hope this goes to a good home, someone who will appreciate it. Good luck and God bless! The item “Authentic Mid 1800’s Sioux Indian Spontoon Pipe Tomahawk Forged Iron Head” is in sale since Sunday, April 18, 2021. The Crow are Native Americans, who in historical times lived in the Yellowstone River valley, which extends from present-day Wyoming, through Montana and into North Dakota, where it joins the Missouri River. In the 21st century, the Crow people are a Federally recognized tribe known as the Crow Tribe of Montana, and have a reservation located in the south central part of the state. Pressured by the Ojibwe and Cree peoples (the Iron Confederacy), who had earlier and better access to guns through the fur trade, the Crow had migrated to this area from the Ohio Eastern Woodland area of present-day Ohio, settling south of Lake Winnipeg. From there, they were pushed to the west by the Cheyenne. Both the Crow and the Cheyenne were pushed farther west by the Lakota (Sioux), who took over the territory west of the Missouri River, reaching past the Black Hills of South Dakota to the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming and Montana. The Cheyenne eventually became allies of the Lakota, as they sought to expel European Americans from the area. The Crow remained bitter enemies of both the Sioux and Cheyenne. The Crow were generally friendly with the whites and managed to retain a large reservation of more than 9300 square kilometers despite territorial losses. Original Crow plains Indian pipe tomahawk. Nice forged iron head forged from an old gun barrel. These style heads are extremely rare! Rifling inside the octagonal bowl. Visible lap weld seam where a hardened still bit was inset into the head. Blacksmiths from the 18th and 19th century would use gun barrel steel to make the tomahawk head. Hand forged on an anvil, oval drift used to form the eye, hard steel bit forge welded in the blade. It doesn’t get any better than this head! Visible forge weld mark (also known as a lap weld) where the head and bit join. 28 1/2 long oval shaped ash haft is magnificent. Haft is solid and strong. Haft to head fit is good, there a very very small amount of movement in the head, very small. Most likely caused by the wood drying over the years and shrinking slightly. Leather gasket is seen between the eye and haft for an airtight seal. Pipe tomahawks were symbols of power and authority. Beautiful piece, a work of art. The surface of the metal shows a nice patina. 28 1/2″ long haft, 9 1/2″ long head. Originates from a Billings Montana estate. Guaranteed authentic for life. The item “Authentic Crow Indian Pipe Tomahawk Forged Gun Barrel Head Extra Long Haft 1780″ is in sale since Saturday, April 25, 2020. AUTHENTIC ANCIENT ANTIQUE NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN STONE HEAD TOMAHAWK AXE HATCHET. The beautiful original and authentic Native American Indian stone head tomahawk was found at the estate of an elderly antiques and ancient artifacts collector. He and his wife had amassed a large collection of pre-1600 fine antiques, mainly consisting of Native American Indian artifacts, brass candlesticks, fine art and American War related items and artifacts, among other things. This piece is either a local Seneca County Iroquois Indian artifact, or may be Navajo or Apache as the bulk of the large collection was made up of artifacts from these three tribes. Provenance: Private Collection, Ontario County, New York, USA. Measures approximately 17 1/2″ tall by 5 3/4″ long by 2 thick. Condition: Great overall condition. 100% original, authentic and unrestored. There is a break in the wood on the underside of the tomahawk where it wraps around and reconnects to the handle (see pics) however it still holds the stone axe head fairly firmly in place. Would make an excellent display piece from one side as is, or fully restore to show off both sides. No other chips, breaks or other damage of any kind to the stone axe head. The wood handle has preserved very well and is very hard and solid. Thanks for looking at my online estate sale finds! Authentic Indian Artifact Native American Collection Relic Lot Arrows Pottery
This is an amazing and once-in-a-lifetime authentic Native American collection that comprises the relics found by a single man! Rarely do you ever see a collection this large and of the stature. All of these relics were hand dug and displayed in a riker box. While the owners display sheet (identification of the arrowheads or locations) was not found, some of the arrowheads, scrapped, spear points, pottery and axe head fragments have the location found written on the backs. Almost every single relic in this collection is hand marked with a number that once corresponded with an identification tag. In my experience collecting these types of relics this is one of the most complete collections and most pristine collections Ive ever seen. Some of the arrowheads have been authenticated by the previous owner as well. YOU GET EVERY BOX AND RELIC IN THESE PICTURES!!!! This would make an amazing collection for an avid arrowhead hunter, or somebody who is looking to explode there starting collection.
