1886 FIRST BIBLE IN SLAVE LANGUAGE FOR AMERICAN INDIANS GOSPEL SYLLABIC NATIVE. OUTMOST RARITY The Gospel of St. Matthew translated into the slave language for the Indians of North-west America. This is very unique and extremely rare Gospel of St. Matthew printed in the syllabic characters for the use of Native nations of North-west America. No copy offered on the antiquarian market for more than 30 years. No copy in the Library of Congress. Very important edition, the first edition in the language of north-American Indians. The book is published at London in 1886. Printed for the British and foreign Bible Society. Translated by Bompas, and transliterated by Reeve. All four of the Gospels had been printed in the Slave language in roman character in 1883, but this was the first printing of the Gospel of St. Matthew in syllabic character. Original green cloth binding. In perfect condition, Some foxing stains on several leaves. Otherwise a perfect copy. Stamp of Bureau de l’Alliance biblique – Biblical Society (Geneve) on verso side of front free end paper. Provenance: This presentation copy of the Biblical Society of Switzerland to Mr. Politch (Polic), delegate of Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (addressed to delegate of Yugoslavia, although it wasn’t country’s official name until 1929) on the occasion of the Founding Assembly of the League of Nations in November 1920.
