1880 Great Lakes Huron Indian Bat Wing Pipe Axe Tomahawk Forged Spontoon Head

A spontoon, sometimes known by the variant spelling espontoon or as a half-pike, is a type of European polearm that came into being alongside the pike. The spontoon was in wide use by the mid-seventeenth century, and it continued to be used until the late-nineteenth century. Unlike the pike, which was an extremely long weapon (typically 14 or 15 feet), the spontoon measured only 6 or 7 feet in overall length. Generally, this weapon featured a more elaborate head than the typical pike. The head of a spontoon often had a pair of smaller blades on each side, giving the weapon the look of a military fork, or a trident. There were also spontoon-style axes which used the same shaped blades mounted on the side of the weapon with a shorter handle. Original old forged iron pipe axe with spontoon style head. Eastern style Great Lakes culture. RARE bat wing incised axe head, it’s seldom seen. Head is huge and oversized. The hickory wood haft is original to the head. The wood has a nice heavy and dark patina. The handle has been well used and has good wear on it. There are many “hot file” marks along the haft and old brass tacks, these are the older tacks that have a square center, made by blacksmiths. A beautiful sign of age. A good patina on the surface of the head and tacks as well. This tomahawk needs to be displayed and cherished for future generations to see and appreciate! 24″ haft 12″ head length. The item “1880 Great Lakes Huron Indian Bat Wing Pipe Axe Tomahawk Forged Spontoon Head” is in sale since Monday, August 19, 2019.
