Very RARE Original Frederic Remington Wood Engraving Printing Block WOW
This is an interesting and Very RARE Original Frederic Remington Wood Engraving Printing Block, incised into a type of light-weight wood or other material, and approximately dating to the 1960’s – 1970’s. This printing block would have been used by an art publishing house that retained permission from the Remington Estate to reproduce some of the artist’s most famous engravings, including this piece titled “Cheyenne Scouts Patrolling the Big Timber of the North Canadian, Oklahoma” and originally dates to a drawing by Remington in 1889. I have not been able to find anything comparable online, and this is definitely a rare piece of Frederic Remington memorabilia. These printing blocks were never supposed to leave the publishing house and were always destroyed after the completion of a limited numbered pressing. An employee must have walked off with this and kept it instead of destroying it. If you look closely at this piece, you can see extremely intricate cut marks and incising, which may have been done either by hand or machine. Approximately 14 1/4 x 17 1/2 inches including frame. Actual printing block is approximately 9 x 12 inches. Good condition for age and use, with some areas of staining from the pigment used for printing on the edges and the verso please see photos. Vintage frame mas moderate scuffing and edge wear. This rare art implement associated with a master of American Western art is not to be missed and is priced to sell. Please check out my other listings for more wonderful and unique artworks! New Rochelle, New York. Born in Canton, New York, Remington found his spiritual home in the American West. The young artist set out for the Montana Territory, determined to gain a firsthand knowledge of western life. During the next few years, he sampled sheepherding, gold prospecting, cowboy life, and cavalry maneuvers in the Southwest. At the same time, he produced black-and-white illustrations of cowboys, Indians, and Plains military campaigns that brought him considerable recognition. S he began to paint and sculpt these same subjects, eventually producing a body of some three thousand vivid pictorial narratives. These made his name synonymous with a powerful nostalgia for the vanishing Wild West. Frederic Remington and the West, Austin: University of Texas Press. Frederic Remington, The Late Years. Very Rare Antique (massive) Sioux Tomahawk, 18th to 19th century Indian Wars
It is massive with 1.08 kg, a characteristic of the very early tomahawks. The metal head/blade was made by the white blacksmiths (interestingly, the logo on blade looks like “Morning Star”, which is very famous to the Indians), and traded to the Indians either directly or via specialized companies (such as the “American Fur Trade Company”). The tribe of tomahawk should be Sioux (according to its origin when acquired and its adornment). It is a rare find nowadays as it is a very early tomahawk decorated with antique red porcupine quills, and a couple of brass tacks and tin cones. Of note, the antique wooden handle (crude cut from tree branch) appears to have some remains of red/redish color, suggesting it had been tinted in red (with pigments) at one time. All is original and antique on this particularly impressive tomahawk. Size (metal head/blade): 7.48 inches. Overall length of tomahawk: 20.47 inches. Weight of tomahawk: 1.08 kg! The item “Very Rare Antique (massive) Sioux Tomahawk, 18th to 19th century Indian Wars” is in sale since Friday, June 7, 2019. This item is in the category “Antiques\Ethnographic\Native American”. Very Old Native American Indian Plains Wooden War Club Stone Head Leather Wrap
Item Type: Native American War Club. Item Description: A wood and leather (probably horse hide) wrapped American Indian War Club. It looks to have been used in battle. While the item looks and feels quite old, it does have a newer leather strap nailed to it. It is a mechanically made wire nail and therefore is from after 1913 when such nails were invented. However, the nail/leather while old, does not strike me as being as old as the rest of the item. Marcel Gibrat (Pictured working on a Greek Kylyx in the 1970s), my grandfather, was a Restorer for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan and later owned a Madison Avenue Restoration Studio and Art Gallery one block from the Guggenheim Museum. From the 1960s to 1990s. Marcel was undoubtedly a genius and was, as far as I know, the only Restorer for the Met without a PhD. In fact he had a sixth grade education. He was also a talented painter. Im Max Lewin the curator of what remains of Marcels extensive art collection, comprising ancient, tribal, Asian and European art. I have grown up around art and. I worked with Marcel summers and in college. Marcel was an unquestioned expert in antiquities and all items in the collection from the ancient world are guaranteed to be authentic. Marcel also had a particular affinity for African tribal art, and while dating such items is problematic, he absolutely had impeccable taste. Some of his opinions on provenance of tribal items have been challenged. There are also Asian items of various quality, and many fine and genuine items from primitive cultures including relatively contemporary (a few hundred years old) and both neolithic and upper paleolithic items. Many of the items have archaeological markings. The item “VERY OLD NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN PLAINS WOODEN WAR CLUB STONE HEAD LEATHER WRAP” is in sale since Tuesday, April 28, 2020.
