Vintage 1972 offset lithographic print on fine art paper made by the renowned photographer of the Native American Indian, Edward S. This is not a photogravure or chemical process print – it is a vintage photo-mechanical offset print (also known as a photo engraving) struck in 1972 from the original pre 1920 Edward S. Rare and out of print, the now famous 1972 printing of these photo lithograph plates marked the first time since the early 20th century that these iconic Native American images have been faithfully reprinted from the original large Curtis photogravure plates, as well as matched for tonality and color. In the year of their release, the famous photography critic and author A. Coleman praised the high quality of these 1972 Edward Curtis fine art plates as being the truest printing of the photographer’s work he had ever seen, outside of the actual original turn of the century plates. Condition of this plate is excellent and it would frame up nicely for display. This vintage 1972 photo engraving is guaranteed to be authentic and comes with a hand signed CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY (COA) with unique individual registered serial number from the Finephoto Vintage Archive & Database. These iconic Native American images have been faithfully crafted in fine sheet fed photogravure (also known as Héliogravure) by The Meriden Gravure Company and matched for tonality and color – their “look” is that of the original pre-1920 gravures. Soft, muted and atmospheric, these images evoke the historic feel of a world and way of life long since gone. The source originals from which these vintage 1972 prints were made came from the Pierpont Morgan Library Curtis collection and the Boston Public Library’s set of original Curtis photogravures from his landmark project “The North American Indian”. Finephoto carries an extensive selection of vintage 1972 Edward S. Curtis prints, in both fine lithography and photogravure – all are matched to the original images in their look. Triple wall inserts, individual acid free black archival backing boards, individual ultra clear heavy duty archival print protectors and a hand signed Certificate Of Authenticity (COA) from Finephoto. ABOUT PHOTOGRAVURE: Photogravure (or héliogravure) is an intaglio printmaking process utilizing a carefully etched copper plate made from the original negative/image. Prints are made by pressing suitable paper heavily down upon the inked copper plate which has been intricately etched to varying depths corresponding with the actual tonality of the original negative, This precisely etched plate combined with a fine “honeycomb” screen controls the amount of ink to be transferred to the paper at any given point in direct proportion to the variation of tone in the original image. The result is a true continuous tone print which combines many qualities of a traditional silver based photograph with a tactile feel similar to an etching, engraving or lithograph. Rich in tonal detail, the photogravure process produces delicately rendered shades for a look which is unique in the world of photographic print making. In the early to mid 1900’s photogravure was selected (when budgets allowed) for special high quality publishing and portfolio projects, but due to its significant expense and labor, the process is rarely seen today. From Man Ray and Ruth Bernhard to Brett Weston and Ansel Adams, many of the world’s most renowned photographic masters have published their images in the rich photogravure process. OFFERS ACCEPTED OFFERS ACCEPTED OFFERS ACCEPTED OFFERS ACCEPTED OFFERS ACCEPTED. For sale we have a beautiful antique Athabascan indian girl doll, circa 1890’s-1900. Hand stitched, artisan crafting, all original parts and pieces. Doll has feet made of walrus tusk. Dolls of this exacting craftsmanship and quality are incredibly rare – especially for turn of the century. This Doll is from the Western Coastal Alaskan / Canadian territories. Produced around 1900, this piece was procured from a Western Canadian Athabascan Indian Woman and her daughter in the early 2000’s at an Native American antiques market in rural Montana. Seal and Moose Furs dominate the foundation of this intricately hewn masterpiece. Her landscape is dotted with tufts of wolf fur, sewn and clasped together with sinews of varying size and shape. The head is painted, but presumably made of Walrus tusk as the feet are. We could see we may have something truly unique and special, this was not just a doll to give to children, but this was a doll meant to preserve legacy and history of your culture to spread to generations to come. We took the doll to be appraised at an antiques roadshow about a month after we got home. Although most entrants never make it to the t. Show, I would have loved to see our appraisers stunned reaction on the silver screen. Most dolls the appraiser had seen from this era looked “primitive” in comparison to this masterpiece. He confirmed turn of the century for the dating, just as the Indian women had stated, and vouched for both the rarity of the materials used and the relatively small number of Athabascan antiquities compared to N. This doll has since been kept in a dark, humidity controlled room for the last decade.
