1840 Péhriska-Rúhpa Two Ravens by Karl Bodmer, hand colored stone lithograph
One of the most iconic images to emerge from the picturing of the American West, and certainly Bodmer’s most famous, this emotive portrait of Péhriska-Rúhpa (“Two Ravens”) presents the warrior and chief of the Hidatsa in way that reflects the vanished era of the Plains Indian. Height: 14.41 in. Width: 10.91 in. Stone lithograph with later hand color. Issued in extremely rare series published for Schinz: Naturgeschichte und Abbildungen des Menschen. Zurich: Honeggerschen Lithographischen Anstalt, 1840. From as early as 1835 (before the official version of Bodmer’s prints had been issued) until 1845, H. Schinz published a natural history, with a focus on humans of different races, which included as illustrations very fine lithographs taken from some of the Bodmer prints. Of the first images after Bodmer that appeared in Schinz’s volume, Peter Bolz wrote: these portraits were the first published copies of pictures of American Indians from Bodmer’s travels in North America. They were issued about a year after his return to Europe and approximately four years before Prince Maximilian started publishing his extravagant travel journal in 1839. This is one of the reasons why the prints are of special significant: they founded the artist’s reputation as the’Indian Bodmer. ” From “Karl Bodmer, Heinrich Rudolf Schinz and the Changing Image of the American Indian in Europe. In Karl Bodmer. This item is in the category “Art\Art Prints”. The seller is “danielgoodantiquarianbooks” and is located in this country: GB. This item can be shipped worldwide.

Native Americans of the Northwest. Chugach man of Prince William’s Sound in conical decorated hat, nose ornament, and labrets of walrus ivory in his lower lip. Nootka man with tattooed brow and nose ring. In EXQUISITE ORIGINAL hand coloured. As such extremely rare. Stone lithography was the first printmaking technology that allowed a traditional artist to work using traditional techniques, and to create prints that could rival an original painting in terms of detail, mood and color variations. Brodtmann employed techniques for “texture” that are quite similar to that of an aquatint. A handsome example of his Brodtmann’s aesthetic sense and skill in the medium complemented by EXCEPTIONAL ORIGINAL HAND COLOURING (found only very rarely). He was a prolific and popular author of zoological works, including volumes on birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians. [Issued in: SCHINZ, HEINRICH RUDOLF]. BRODTMANN, KARL JOSEPH, Lithographer. Took me a while to figure out what I was looking at…. Native American Indian Effigy Artifact. Recovered in Floyd County Iowa. Measuring approximately 10 inches tall & about 7 inches wide, Its weight is 13 pounds. It is thought to have belonged to the mound builders who inhabited this area pre-1800’s, but that is only a guess. Some have said it looks like a petrified head and I’d tend to agree. A stand or lighted enclosure is being considered for this relic. The item “Paleo Native American Indian Stone Effigy Head Iowa Cedar Creek Medicine Man” is in sale since Friday, September 10, 2021.
