This is not a photogravure or chemical process print – it is a vintage photo-mechanical offset print (also known as a photo engraving) struck in 1972 from the original pre 1920 Edward S. Rare and out of print, the now famous 1972 printing of these photo lithograph plates marked the first time since the early 20th century that these iconic Native American images have been faithfully reprinted from the original large Curtis photogravure plates, as well as matched for tonality and color. In the year of their release, the famous photography critic and author A. Coleman praised the high quality of these 1972 Edward Curtis fine art plates as being the truest printing of the photographer’s work he had ever seen, outside of the actual original turn of the century plates. Condition of this plate is excellent and it would frame up nicely for display. This vintage 1972 photo engraving is guaranteed to be authentic and comes with a hand signed CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY (COA) with unique individual registered serial number from the Finephoto Vintage Archive & Database. Computer scans simply cannot do justice nor render the soft color palette and rich tonality of the actual print itself. The watermark word “Finephoto” does not appear on the actual print. The Native American warrior can be imagined walking through a wind-whipped forest, strolling with a deer in, looking high into the sky that appears and disappears through the dancing leaves of treetops. Shamans work with their allies-the animal spirits in order to receive messages of healing and insight. Gathering the Great Spirit into his soul, he listens to the silent language of the wise voices of the animal spirits that surround him. The deer symbolizes gentleness in word and thought, ability to listen, grace and appreciation for the beauty of balance, understanding of what’s necessary for survival, power of gratitude and giving and connection to the woodland goddess. This multi-meaning, spiritually rich sculpture is ideal for any Native American Indian enthusiast or one who needs to be reminded of the messages that emit through this piece. This work has visible brush strokes, full bodied and is alive. There are earth tones in each painting so that it fits in on any wall. Laurelle Macy grew up on a farm in northern Canada. Endless in its dimensions, untamed in its spirit, curious in its isolation, to Laurelle it is this and more. It is the stuff of passion, of creation, of timeless inspiration. Macys relationship with the land and its people is a seasoned one. Raised in a series of bush camps, Indian reservations and boom towns in Canadas North West Territories, Macy understood early on, that her paintings could act as windows to a world little seen by others, but well known and loved by her. Laurelle first obtained her Associates in Adverting Design. She worked as a graphic designer before moving on to get her Bachelors in art at Brigham Young University. After returning to the north Laurelle enjoyed success in a number of galleries, festival and commissions. Her and her family moved to Utah where she completed her masters degree at the University of Idaho and has been actively involved in advanced design education at the college level. Laurelles major talent lies in her portrayal of what she calls living material. The centerpieces of her artwork are native people, landscapes, and wildlife, all arrestingly alive in her paintings. Macys refinement of detail is engaging and her love of color apparent, at times immediate and aggressive, at others subtle and leading. Macy experience with color and composition seems to reflect the very personality of her subjects. To see her paintings and feel somehow touched by an open genuine spirit. This singular connection between the viewer and the subject is Macys desire. To paint the west, its people, animals and its landscape with compassion and insight, she hopes is her success. Laurelle Macys work has been shown in galleries across Northern Canada and in select studios in Utah. In addition to her work, Macy is faculty a national art institute, has illustrated childrens books, portrait painter and is a 3 time grant recipient celebrating northern native people. Her diverse career, where she worked along side Dene Nation elders and Inuit carvers, to the cutting edge world of graphic design gives her tremendous understanding and perspective. An artist of unquestionable talent with yet untapped potential. Macy is certainly someone to watch for. Alexander Phimister Proctor – HUGE! (40″ Inches Height x 31″ ½ Inches Width) – Bronze Sculpture “INDIAN WARRIOR” with brown patina, from 1898 Gold Medal Winner! – Signed, Stamped, and Inscribed along the base:’1898/GOLD MEDAL/PARIS EXPOSITION/1900′ and’Copy Rt 1899′.. (September 27, 1860 September 5, 1950) was an American Sculptor. With the contemporary reputation as one of the nation’s foremost animal sculptors. He is mostly recognized. As a skilled animal sculptor and leader in monumental sculpture on western themes… Born in Canada, he grew up in Denver, Colorado. Hunting and hiking in the western mountain region provided him with knowledge of animal life and behavior. Because of his western background, he became known as the sculptor in buckskin. Proctor studied at the Art Students League and National Academy of Design in New York, and later at the Académie Julien in Paris. His first major project was sculpting life-size animal figures in staff (impermanent plaster and fabric) for the Chicago Worlds Columbian Exposition in 1893. He assisted Augustus Saint-Gaudens by modeling the horses for Saint-Gaudenss monuments to General Logan, Chicago, and General Sherman, New York. Proctors monumental sculptures have become an important part of the civic landscape of America. Among his works are the Buffalo on the Q Street Bridge, Washington, D. Tigers at Nassau Hall, Princeton University; Broncho Buster and On the War Trail, Civic Center, Denver; Pioneer Mother, Kansas City, Missouri; Theodore Roosevelt, Portland, Oregon, and Minot, North Dakota; and Mustangs, University of Texas, Austin. Proctors mastery of animal anatomy and his interest in western subjects also became evident in his smaller sculptures. He created striking representations of a stalking panther, a bear head for the Boone and Crockett club, a portrait bust of Iron Tail, and many other subjects. Proctor spent his last years living with his daughter in Palo Alto, California. “Indian Warrior” , a powerful depiction of a dignified Indian chief prepared for battle, is one of Alexander Phimister Proctor’s most celebrated works. While not monumental in scale, attracted international attention after it was awarded a gold medal for sculpture at the Paris Universal Exposition in 1900. Proctor portrayed the “Indian warrior” in a heroic pose, mounted on horseback as military leaders have traditionally been depicted. To accurately capture the anatomy of the horse, Proctor studied a horse owned by a friend in New York, and gave the horse qualities of elegance and dignity worthy of the Warriors mount. Proctor traveled to the. Reservation in Montana in 1895, to research Indian subjects, and during this trip he modeled a small version of “Indian Warrior”. Although Weasel Head, a Blackfoot, served as the final model for this figure.. In 1896, after Proctor was awarded the Rinehart Scholarship Committee to study abroad, he went to Paris between the years 1897 and 1898, and Proctor rented a studio space from the French sculptor Alfred Bouché at 11 Impasse Ronsin. It was there, immediately when he decided to create the larger size and by 1898, castings of both the large and small versions were available in bronze… He “Indian Warrior” sculpture is not a specific portrait, Proctor created an idealized image of the Indian as a proud and noble Warrior. He stares at the beholder, wild and bold, with an air of spiritual resilience. His hair is adorned with braids that are wrapped with strips of deer hide coated with a turquoise patina. A long feather lost in the back of his hair stretches towards gravity also finished in a turquoise patina. He wears a bone breastplate which was a popular chest ornament or armor. Since the hair-pipe bones were difficult and expensive to obtain, the number of bones in the plate often indicated the wealth of a warrior. Such breastplates were worn on occasion in battle, but could be penetrated easily by an arrow or a bullet, so they were mainly a decorative or medicine item. The sculpture was molded using the archaic method of lost-wax casting with skin tones finished in a brown patina stain for perpetuation. The chief is mounted upon a black marble plinth with the artist. Virgin Islands, however, an additional charge may be required.
